kindergarten book bag program (to begin in october)
Dear Parents/Caregivers,
Each week, your child will receive a “Library Reading Book Bag” from the school library. The bag will contain three books and a "My Book List" to be completed by you.
A "My Book List" form will be sent home every week when your child brings home the Library Reading Book Bag with a new set of books. Please indicate if the book has been read by you, the parent/older sibling/caregiver or by your child. Please return the bag of books and the completed "My Book List" every week when your child has Library day, so that the bags can be processed and rotated to the next child.
As you and your child accumulate lists of books and materials being read, it becomes very motivating to read more. Regular trips to your local public library and of course reading books from your bookshelves will build your child’s reading confidence. In the Library, we continue to reward all students who manage to read up to and beyond one hundred books with our “Hundred Book Challenge” so please remind your child about this incentive. Happy Reading everyone! Remember, if you read everyday, you’ll lead a better life!
Please read and discuss the books in the bag using at least one of the reading strategies provided below.
· Ask simple questions while you read with or to your child. (Who, what, when where, why, how?)
· Use prediction strategies (What do you think this book is going to be about? What will happen next?)
· Encourage your child to relate what is happening in the story to his/her own life (This reminds me of…)
· Use the ‘retelling strategy’ (What happened in the beginning, middle, and end?)
· Encourage your child to choose reading materials that they are interested in.
· Read aloud to your child (Engage your child by changing your voice)
